Project 12: City of Rovaniemi
Organization
Rovaniemi is a small city of approx 60 000 inhabitants, situated in the Arctic Circle in Finland. It is quite lively and active for its size, thanks to its status as Lapland’s capital, good opportunities to study and growing tourism. Nature is always close here and we’re happy to enjoy four seasons.
Rovaniemi City Youth Services is a department in the municipal public organization. The municipal youth services consist of a variety of activities which all share the common aim to offer the youngsters equal and high quality possibilities of participation and sense of belonging to the community. We want to offer an interesting and educational programme for the children and young people under the age of 29 years. The guiding values of our work are safety, equality, participation and creativity. All our activities comply with the Youth Act and the ethical code for youth work drawn by the national umbrella organizations for youth work and youth workers.
Your work as a volunteer
Volunteers will work at Cultural house Monde. Work includes café work (attending clients, baking and cleaning) and volunteers will also organize small-scale activities e.g. handicrafts or other workshops that can be attended by the clients of the Monde. We want to help the people of Rovaniemi to experience a sense of community when participating in the activities organized by the volunteers. It is also important to raise awareness among the local youngsters about the European Solidarity Corps program and the possibilities it offers. The volunteers work 30 hours weekly, normally divided in 5 days.
Accommodation, meals and transport
The travel to Rovaniemi and back home after the project as well as housing, food allowance and pocket money are covered by the project fund. The housing is organized in an apartment shared by other volunteers. The food and pocket money are paid at the end of each month to a Finnish bank account. The residence permit and the insurance are covered by the project fund. The volunteers get a prepaid phone card. They also have free wifi in their apartment.
Volunteer profile
We will select two sociable and rather independent young adults interested in the project themes. English language is necessary to adapt to the work organization and the local community. The volunteers will be chosen preferably from different countries. Since they will live in a shared flat, they should be rather tolerant and flexible with different people. It is an advantage, if the volunteers have some personal interest or hobby, that may be useful in the project activities.
