🍂Fun fact of the month

Helsinki (dis)connected meets Folk it Up!💃

Helsinki (dis)connected goes Folk dancing!!💫

This time, we will have a fun and inclusive Balfolk-inspired event, organised in collaboration with Folk it Up!, where both dance lovers and total beginners can move, play, and express themselves freely. Balfolk is a style of social folk dancing rooted in various European traditions. These dances are inclusive, community-driven, and often organized by passionate amateurs rather than professionals. They emphasize connection, celebration, and togetherness.🤝

During the event, we’ll learn simple group dances and partner dances inspired by these traditions. You will be guided through the steps and don’t need any experience — everyone is welcome!❤️

We will dance a lot, but we’ll also make sure to include breaks to socialize, catch our breath, and enjoy some vegan snacks🥗 provided by the project’s volunteers.

It consists of monthly events, each featuring a different activity to take a break from the screens. The goal is to create a welcoming space where young people can meet, learn something new, discover their interests and build meaningful connections offline.  We also offer free plant-based food.

Fun Fact of the month

A little new addition to our English newsletter is the fun fact of the month, where we will share a random trivia that will blow your minds!!🤸‍♀️

 Did you know...

That in 1518, in Strasbourg, Alsace (Holy Roman Empire), hundreds of people were uncontrollably dancing for months, without an apparent reason?👀

It all started in July, when a woman, Troffea, started dancing in the town's square non-stop and with time, other people joined her - by August, hundreds of people seemed to be dancing (some, unfortunately, even to death).
By September, some had stopped or deceased and the remaining people were taken to St Vitus for "divine healing".

The reason is still not sure, some scholars say it could be due to a poisoning of the town's crops, mass hysterya and others, while for their contemporaries it was demonic possession or divine punishment.

It is known in history as "The Dancing Plague" and there were other similiar cases all over Europe since the medieval era, possibly culminating in the 2000's trend of shopping malls' flash mobs😎 (what a time to be alive!)

Anyways, if you would like to get into the Dance Fever with us, for a couple of hours (unfortunately),  join our Folk Dancing event with Helsinki (dis)connected on the 18th November, see you there!💃
