Deeds of Hope 🥁 Drums and protest workshop

For this month's Deeds of Hope event, we're ready to make some noise!

On the 11th of November, we will meet the activists of Rhythms of Resistance, and we’ll try playing the group’s “statement” tunes in a workshop open to everyone. No need for experience with drums or any kind of musical instrument! 🥁

Music is a crucial component of many successful demonstrations. The grooves played out in the streets echo the pulsating beats of our bodies’ excitement as we fight for the causes close to our hearts.

Let’s learn more about the movement that rocks Helsinki’s foundations — playing drums during actions and demonstrations for social and ecological justice. 💜

Program of the evening:

🕠 17:30–18:30 – First part of the workshop
🍲 18:30–19:00 – Dinner break – free vegan food!
🥁 19:00–20:00 – Second part of the workshop
💬 20:00 onwards – Chats and chilling

Deeds of Hope 🌼 is a European Solidarity Corps (ESC) solidarity project. It’s created by youth, run by volunteers, and co-funded by the European Union.
It consists of a series of monthly events where we meet to share knowledge about activism and social engagement, explore the impact of Helsinki’s changemakers, and learn how to become part of movements for change.
We’ll get our hands dirty in practical workshops, where each month’s featured movement or organization shares hands-on skills and knowledge gained from their experience in activism.

We also offer free plant-based meals 🌱, cooked by our volunteers with primarily seasonal and locally produced ingredients.

Do you want to join our volunteer crew, too? 🤸‍♀️ Send us an email at volunteer@alli.fi to get on board!

📝 Registration form

Although the event and participation are free, we require participants to register. You can find more information about the event and the registration form at this link.

🕺🏾 Folk it up! November ✨

Though the days are shorter and skies greyer, the show must go on. 💃 Our first Folk it Up! event of the month was a success - thank you to everyone who attended and danced with us to the tune of Ukrainian traditions. And, of course, thank you to our amazing guests for their workshops during the last 2 sessions and for showcasing their cultures! 🇵🇸🇺🇦

This time, we're going back to the basics. For our second November event, we'll dance some favourites from our October and November sessions but don’t worry if you’re new to Folk it Up! — our volunteers will be there to guide you through the steps and make sure everyone feels included. 🙌

And to keep things varied, a couple of participants have already offered to share dances from Greece 🇬🇷 and Portugal 🇵🇹, their countries of origin — and we couldn’t be more excited!

But we’d love to hear from you, too! 👈
Is there a specific dance you’d like to add to our repertoire? Or one we’ve danced before that you’d like to repeat?
👉 Let us know by filling out the form!

As always, we will dance a lot, but we’ll also make sure to include breaks to socialise, catch our breath, and enjoy some vegan snacks 🥗 provided by the project’s volunteers.

🌈 Folk it up is a European Solidarity Corps solidarity project, run by volunteers. The bi-monthly events bring together international and local youth to learn about balfolk. During each event we learn new folk dances originating from different countries around the world and practice previously learned ones. We socialise, connect and, of course, enjoy some vegan snacks together!
