Project 2 : YMCA Heinola and Basketball Hall of Fame
YMCA Heinola
YMCA Heinola is a basketball and ultimate club located in Heinola. There are about 150 players aged from 5 years old to seniors. Heinola is a town of 19000 inhabitants. It’s located about 130 km from Helsinki, and 30km from Lahti.
Your work as a volunteer
Tasks include working with the young and activating them to the sporty lifestyle. There is also different kind of media things (social media, digitalizing, video/photo editing) and working with the basketball museum.
The volunteer works in YMCA Heinola with social media, taking live streams and videos of basketball games, organizing open gym –practices, helping with tournament arrangements and helping with some simple household chores. The volunteer works also in YMCA Café, located in YMCA Training Center. Volunteers are also helping the Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame (Basketball Museum) with some events and material digitalizing during the period.
Accomodation
The housing is next to the main building, YMCA Training Center. There are private rooms for both volunteers (shared bathroom and kitchen) and the possibility to cook on your own. There are very short distances in Heinola and bikes to use. Volunteers can participate weekly in Finnish language and culture education in Heinola.
Volunteer profile
Looking for 2 volunteers with experience/ interest in basketball and ultimate.
We hope that our volunteers would be interested in basketball (the best is to have some experiences with basketball) and our newest thing, Ultimate. We hope you to be positive, sociable and reliable, and ready to do activities with children and other coaches. In basketball training, young players speak only the Finnish language, but volunteers can use English.
The position is suitable for any young person aged 18-30, but we are not able to guarantee accessibility and/or special help for disabled persons due to buildings, stairs and transportation options.
The project starts at the beginning of August, but it’s flexible. One volunteer is working half a year till January 2021 and another ends in summer 2021. We are open to discuss with the volunteers what kind of work the volunteers would like to/can do. We would like to have a short interview with Google Meet.
